Description: We cannot be satisfied, and thus we remain unhappy. Also, we may want things that are bad for us because of environmental influence
"happiness depends on mental constructs rather than on the realities of life. People can be unhappy in perfect conditions because they want more, and be happy in misery because they acquiesce. Lasting happiness is again unlikely because any improvement is overhauled by a rise in aspirations. At best we can try to slow down such adjustments by preaching modesty
Standards of comparison are individual mental constructs which do not necessarily fit any real requirements for a good life. People may want things that are actually bad for them and fail to want that they in fact need. This is especially likely if propaganda and fashion seduce them to reach out for the wrong things."

Description: Do Habits Depend on Goals?
"Findings from these diverse research paradigms suggest that habits are triggered by associated cues in a manner that does not depend on currently holding a goal that motivates performance.”

Description: The multiple processes by which past behavior predicts future behavior.
"Past behavior guides future responses through 2 processes. Well-practiced behaviors in constant contexts recur because the processing that initiates and controls their performance becomes automatic. Frequency of past behavior then reflects habit strength and has a direct effect on future performance. ”

Description: Making a Habit of Doing the Right Thing.
"1) Human societies, like individual human lives, ultimately depend and flourish not on a foundation of personality traits but on a foundation of habits of character. That’s why I stress that it is impossible to improve our individual lives or our society without making personal character a top priority.
2) “You actually have to practice having good character. I find it’s helpful to ask myself again and again, ‘am I doing the right thing?’ Not, ‘do I know what’s right and good,’ but ‘am I choosing to do the right thing?’ Every time we choose to do what’s right, we practice; we exercise our ethical muscles to the point where doing what’s right and good becomes a habit.”

Aristotle
Field of reference: Psychology, Philosophy
Description: Aristotelian virtue theory
"1) We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
2) Moral virtues come from habits. They are not in us neither by nature, nor in despite of nature, but we are furnished by nature with a capacity for receiving them, and we develop them through habit."
